Dr Simon Lindley conducts Sheffield Bach Choir, joined by St Peter's Singers from Leeds and choristers from St John's Ranmoor, in this performance of Bach's masterpiece. Stephen Liley and Thomas Hunt reprise their roles as the Evangelist and Christ, while award-winning bass Sam Carl joins Sheffield's talented sopranos Anna Harvey (Welsh National Opera) and Ella Taylor (former BBC Chorister of the Year). The double orchestra is provided by Sally Robinson's highly acclaimed National Festival Orchestra.

Judged by any yardstick, Bach’s Passion Settings have to be ranked as amongst the greatest musical works ever written. Sheffield Bach Choir present the St Matthew Passion of 1729, one of only two that survive in complete form. The work is masterful in its use of double chorus and orchestra to convey this most powerful of stories, and Bach deployed Chorale Hymns throughout to enable the congregation to participate in a work that was essentially composed for public worship. Sheffield Bach Choir present the work in its entirety, hence the start time of 6.30pm, and welcome audience participation in the much-loved Chorale Hymns.
