Heartbeat gallery aims to create an unpretentious and welcoming environment, presenting contemporary art works that prompt human exchange and dialogue. The pulse of Heartbeat is visual pleasure and is raised by the inexplicable emotion stimulated by striking art.

Heartbeat’s curatorial approach stems from a belief that the success of an exhibition is not only based on the aesthetic, spatial arrangement of objects, but also on the relationship between these objects and the visitor.

The curatorial approach draws upon Nicolas Bourriaud’s work “Relational Aesthetics,” creating what the project managers like to call “Relational Curating”. In Relational Art, the audience is envisaged as a community; Bourriaud holds out hope that the gallery space can surpass its role as commentator of modern life and begin providing projects of human exchange. Taking influence from Bourriaud’s theory, Heartbeat Gallery aims to supply the “conditions” for interaction, turning the audience into active participants and therefore cancelling art’s discriminative powers, allowing visitors to feel good about themselves and enjoy the exhibition. Steps will be taken to make the gallery space more "user-friendly" to visitors through the development of an anti-elitist strategy that will focus on the presentation of art as event rather than art as object.

The main intention is to facilitate a playful access to the exhibitions by considering the exhibition as a live medium, rather than simply a spatial exercise. Heartbeat will aim to make the gallery space less intimidating, creating an unpretentious and welcoming social atmosphere with interactive artworks that prompt human exchange and dialogue. Heartbeat strives to seek out works that are playful, quirky, colourful and create a utopia that stimulates a sense of escapism by diverting the viewer’s attention to purely imaginative activity. A fundamental step towards creating this comfortable and uplifting environment will be the use of popular music in the gallery space. This will evoke familiarity within visitors and erase any notions of elitism commonly attached to the white cube gallery space.
