Old Holy Trinity Church in Wentworth bears witness to the turbulent times of the 17th and 18th century as well as giving a poignant insight to family tragedies in the 19th century.

The church is partially ruined but remains a powerful presence in the village, situated opposite the ‘New Church’ of 1877. In the care of the Churches Conservation Trust for over 30 years, the church and its monuments are the subject of an ongoing programme of sensitive conservation.

Inside the church visitors can explore the world of the Wentworth family, including Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford, executed by order of Parliament on 12th May 1641. Nearby is the monument to Henrietta Maria Stanley, wife of the 2nd Earl who declares that ‘never did wife more passionately love her husband.

Visitors can also examine the hatchments of both 1st and 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, the latter Prime Minister in the 18th century. The Fitzwilliam Crypt is open to guided tours when the church is open and a graveyard survey has recently been completed and digitised.
