Details

Welcome to our beautiful 15th century church set in Sheffield's Peak District, with many interesting features. In 'England's Thousand Best Churches', Simon Jenkins writes that, from the church, 'the view is glorious, enjoyed by the weather beaten gargoyles peering from under toppling pinnacles'.

The church retains features from the original stone church (dating from 1109), and houses a carved Anglo-Saxon cross believed to date from the ninth century. The original church was largely rebuilt in the 1480s in the Perpendicular style, using some of the original masonry.

There is much to see in our beautiful church. There are 17 stained glass windows, mainly from the late 1800s although one window includes fragments of glass from the 15th century. The pulpit features carved panels portraying Christ with the four Gospel writers and oak panels brought from Normandy in 1886 decorate the sanctuary and the altar. There is a camber beam roof with carved feet and various embossing, and the original Norman font.

The church features memorials to the Bradfield men who perished in both world wars, and a slate plaque commemorates the Great Sheffield Flood of 1864 when the nearby Dale Dike Reservoir broke and 270 people drowned. A number of flood victims are buried in the churchyard.

Near the main gates stand an irregular shaped watch house, built in 1831 to fight against grave robbers looking for fresh corpses for medical study. Friends and relatives often guarded recently buried loved ones with guns. It is the only surviving watch house in Yorkshire and today is a private dwelling.

Our Art and Craft Fair takes place each year on Easter Monday and Easter Tuesday. The Bradfield Festival of Music takes place each year at the end of June.
