We think our church is wonderful, and we hope you will come and see for yourself.

It was built in 1855, when the communities of Brampton and West Melton were growing fast with the expansion of coal mining. The last 20 years have seen major changes in our community with our pits closing, but new houses, new jobs and wonderful countryside give us optimism for the future. The church is at the heart of the community, which includes two church schools, and has a good mix of ages.

Christ Church is a splendid Victorian church, built in the decorated style. The church windows all have delicate and unique tracery and beautiful stained glass, by Whitefriars.

The tower can be seen for miles around and there are gargoyles on the outside and lots of angels inside. The top of one pillar boasts a cow eating grass (a green man!?) on one side and the face of a milk maid on the other side.

The sanctuary is separated from the nave by a much admired rood screen, with the figures of Jesus, Mary and St John. The rear of the church has been developed to provide rooms, toilets and a kitchen making the church practical for the 21st century.
