The old town of Royston is centred on the church of St John the Baptist and a series of almost parallel trees running up towards the Warren. This gem of a church is light and airy, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Royston can trace its history back at least two millennia. In Roman times it was the crossing place for two great roads, Icknield Way and Ermine Street. The line of these roads can frequently still be seen in today's road pattern.

There is evidence that the church was originally built by the monks of Monk Bretton Priory, and consecrated in 1234. Most of the present building is 15th century. There are many things to see, including a beautiful churchyard with clipped yew trees and a lych gate. The nave roof has very fine carved roof bosses, including some green-men, and ancient carved screens. There are some very fine monuments and the shaft of a Saxon preaching cross.

A real curiosity in Royston is its 'cave', a man-made feature whose origins are uncertain. It contains unique medieval carvings, including one of St Katherine, with the spiked wheel on which she was martyred.
