In 1887 The Wednesday Football Club moved to Olive Grove and entered into a defining moment in their history. The new ground enabled the club to turn professional and therefore keep pace with their Lancashire rivals.

Over the course of 12 seasons Wednesday would appear in two FA Cup Final’s, winning the trophy in 1896, win the Football Alliance before joining the elite teams of the Football League in 1892. Olive Grove played host to many famous football matches and was a fortress when it came to big FA Cup ties.
Many colourful characters played in the blue and white stripes during this golden period in the clubs history.

Mark Metcalf and Clive Nicholson, the authors of the successful Flying Over An Olive Grove book, will host the evening that plays tribute to these players and the ground that they played upon.

Families from players who played on Olive Grove will be present and a large collection of memorabilia will be on display, including medals, caps and badges that will never be on public display again.

As part of the evening everyone present will receive a free copy of ‘the Olive Grove Scrapbook’ a 40-page book that has been exclusively produced for the event. The first 50 people to purchase tickets will also receive a set of eleven 1896 ‘Forgotten Favourites’ collector cards, featuring the players that brought the FA Cup back to Yorkshire for the very first time.

Mark and Clive’s previous talks around the UK have proved immensely popular due to Mark’s extensive knowledge of football and Clive’s unrivalled collection of images that he collected during his 26 years of research into the life of Wednesday legend Fred Spiksley, the collection include photographs of Olive Grove itself and action photographs of the 1896 FA Cup Final.
