The abstract within art is something that continues to divide opinion. It’s simplified and schematic expressions of movement, form and colour, its refusal to conceal its process and the liminal space that it places the viewer in creates questions about art and it’s purpose. All these elements and the questions they pose are what artist Errol Sweetland enjoys exploring through his work. Sweetland, a Sheffield based artist, discovered a passion for abstract painting upon visiting galleries and becoming inspired by modern master such as Pollock as well as other contemporary abstractionist such as Bridget Riley, Bob Brighton and Alex Echo. Unconcerned with heavy context and contrived concept, Sweetland’s work focuses on the essentials of painting; pure colour and process. Finding painting a meditative activity, the artist becomes lost in his rhythmic, repetitive actions as he moves paint around the canvas or board, finding a balance between chance and intention. The artist’s main priority however is the viewer. He likes to create a space through his paintings where viewers can let their imagination run free, interpreting the shapes, colours and forms in their own individual ways, and this is the purpose of his latest solo exhibition; Abstraction: Free To Imagine. Curator Elizabeth Dickinson explains; “The purpose of Errol’s work is very valuable. Whilst some people might turn their nose up at its simplicity, I feel that in a world where context and meaning is force fed to us through the media, and in a time of such political uncertainty, it’s important to have creative spaces where we can just be. Where we are free to interpret as we wish, meditate and reset our minds”. Errol Sweetland’s Abstraction; Free To Imagine is on display at The Gallery at Montgomery Hall, Sheffield from the 31st October until the 19th December 2017 (Mon-Fri 10-4, Sat-Sun occasional late nights). The artist invites everyone to the opening evening on 30th October 7-9pm. For more information visit or his facebook page @errolsweetlandart.
